Habitat selection in whiting
نویسندگان
چکیده
Given a choice of habitats in a laboratory experiment, whiting Merlangius merlangus preferentially spent most time over sand, then gravel and least time over a habitat with emergent structures. The introduction of a predator stimulus increased the preference for the sand habitat for large whiting, whereas small whiting had an increased preference for the habitat with emergent structures. # 2004 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles

The role of seagrass as preferred habitat for juvenile Sillaginodes punctata (Cuv. & Val.) (Sillaginidae, Pisces): habitat selection or feeding?
Previous experiments have shown that the relationship between abundance of juvenile fishes and seagrass density is the result of habitat seiection rather than direct predation, but have not distinguished between habitat selection and simple feeding. The simple feeding model, in which fish swim until they find food, eat it, and swim again, predicts that fish will be found where the most food is ...

Considering the fact that fish biodiversity conservation and land uses planning, require reliable information about fish distribution and habitat use patterns In order to describe species habitat properties, habitat use and habitat selectivity indices are applied. Relative frequency and environmental variables, depth, width, slope of river, altitude, velocity, substrate, Overstream canopy closu...
متن کاملNatural selection on social signals: signal efficacy and the evolution of chameleon display coloration.
Whether general patterns of signal evolution can be explained by selection for signal efficacy (detectability) has yet to be established. To establish the importance of signal efficacy requires evidence that both signals and their detectability to receivers have evolved in response to habitat shifts in a predictable fashion. Here, we test whether habitat structure has predictable effects on the...
متن کاملPicking a tree: habitat use by the tree agama, Acanthocercus atricollis atricollis, in South Africa
INTRODUCTION Habitat selection by animals has been defined as the active choice of an area from a range of alternatives in the absence of constraints (Partridge 1978). In reality, no area is free of constraints and habitat selection depends on the physical structure of the environment, the physiology of the animal, food availability and protection from predators (Ward & Lubin, 1993). There are ...
متن کاملSelection of nesting habitat of hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) in two coral islands of Qeshm and Hengam in the Persian Gulf, Iran
The Persian Gulf islands are the nesting regions for the severely endangered hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) species. Therefore, the selection of the nesting habitat of this species in the two islands of Qeshm and Hengam was studied by a five-member working group in the spring of 2013 - 2015. Ultimately, 23 and 17 nests were identified in the south of Qeshm Island and in the south and...
